RECOGNIZING ROMA’S RIGHTS AND FIGHTING ANY DISCRIMINATION

Date(s) from 28/03/2017 to 28/03/2017

The Congress approved the proposed Declaration by the Mayors of the European Council’s States members presented by John Warmisham (UK/SOC), the Congress’ Spokesperson against the antiziganism. The Declaration’s core point is the engagement to recognize Rom’s rights, to facilitate their integration, to fight against any form of discrimination and hostility against gipsy communities.

Mr Warmisham stressed that according to the signed Declaration the mayors expressed their conviction "that the representation of ethnic minority groups, especially Roma and Travellers, in the political process is an integral part of the democratic process, since political parties are, or should strive to be, a reflection of society".

“Rom community has long been victim of discriminations and prejudices – the President of Socialist Group, Fassino, said. We cannot forget that Rom were also victims of the gas chambers and Nazi extermination. If we do want a free and fair world, we must struggle in order to achieve recognition and respect of identity, culture and rights of any single person. And this principle applies to Rom, too. For this reason, we urge all Mayors to sign the Declaration against antiziganism and to promote, in any City, activities supporting such an engagement."
